Guinness World Record Hockey Game 2003
Thunder Bay paramedics were able to raise more than $39,000 for the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. The funds are dedicated to trauma services and the new emergency department. Eleven Thunder Bay paramedics, one Longlac paramedic, and two paramedic students were joined by police officers, physicians, and other friends in breaking the Guinness World Record by 12 hours. Bruises, muscle strains, dislocated parts, and foot blisters were the order of the day(s), although fortunately there were no serious injuries.
Playing for 92 consecutive hours from noon on Monday, 21 April, through to 08:00 Friday the 25th, the players followed detailed specifications from Guinness in order to qualify for the record. A comprehensive package, including 92 hours of videotape and detailed logs from the many volunteer scrutineers and medical people were sent to London, England for inspection by Guinness. The successful outcome of the game would not have been possible without the help of over 80 volunteers and the more than one-year of planning by the organizing committee.
