PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR (PAD) PROGRAM Superior North EMS, in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, has taken the lead in developing and implementing a PAD program throughout the Thunder Bay District. These defibrillators allow people who are trained in CPR use the device to try to save a life. The PAD will analyze a victim's heart and may deliver an electric shock. In a cardiac arrest, two keys to survival are early CPR and defibrillation. For every minute a person is in cardiac arrest, the chance of survival decreases by about 10 %. On December 14, 2007 David Nuttall was playing hockey at the Port Arthur Arena when he suddenly collapsed. Teammates recognized that David did not have a pulse and they immediately began CPR. Using a PAD which just weeks prior had been installed at the arena, one electric shock was administered. David regained a pulse and shortly thereafter was conscious and alert. He was discharged from the Health Sciences Centre a week later with no adverse after effects from his cardiac arrest. PADs can save lives. Superior North EMS encourages both public and private facilities to purchase these devices and train staff in their use. Current locations where PAD's are or will be installed: City of Thunder Bay Town of Marathon Town of Manitowadge Town of Nipigon Town of Red Rock Municipality of Greenstone Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge Businesses that are interested in starting PAD programs and would like further information can contact Superior North EMS at 625-4609. Josh Klukie
Private Josh Klukie was a Canadian soldier from Thunder Bay that in 2006 was killedin action in Afghanistan. Josh graduated from the paramedic program at Confederation College and was well known to our Thunder Bay paramedics. Josh was very athletic and intelligent, had a great personality, and always lived in Northern Ontario. In order to keep the spirit that Josh had alive, Devin Doran, a Thunder Bay paramedic, has started a memorial fund in Josh's memory. The annual bursary will be given to one second year paramedic student at Confederation College who best exemplified what Josh stood for in life. Once this fund reaches $5,000, the Ontario government will match it. To keep this fund alive and make it grow all donations will be added to this principle. Each year as the fund gets bigger it will be reflected in the award. Donations may be sent to: Receipts will be issued for any donation over $10.00 |

A special ceremony was held at Thunder Bay City Hall on March 23, 2007 to present certificates to six Thunder Bay and one Armstrong Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). The paramedics have now been certified as ACPs after completing a seven month program delivered by Superior North EMS in conjunction with Sudbury's Cambrian College. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's Base Hospital Program provided medical direction and certification for the ACPs. The training allows the paramedics to provide advanced care to patients, including intubation, cardiac and narcotic drug therapy, intravenous therapy, and cardioversion. Further, this intensive seven month program helps these paramedics with other aspects of care such as critical thinking and advanced assessment skills. The laboratory sessions were conducted with over $400,000 worth of advanced interactive equipment designed to provide realistic training scenarios.
