Thunder Bay Paramedics Achieve Guinness World Record
Official certificate from Guinness issued on July 3, 2003July 15, 2003 - Guinness World Records Ltd has certified that the Thunder Bay Paramedics have played the world's longest official ice hockey game, at 92 hours. The certificate was received last week.
"We're very happy to have been recognized for this exceptional achievement", said Norm Gale, chairperson for the event. "Getting the record is certainly very gratifying, but the main goal was to raise money for trauma services at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital." Through pledges and corporate donations, the players raised $39, 400.
According to researchers at Guinness, the longest ice hockey game is one of the most sought after and broken records. They receive over 100 enquiries per year, with 20 credible attempts annually, mostly in Canada. The Thunder Bay Paramedics are the third group to hold the record this year.
In a letter from Guinness, Sophie Whiting writes: "I am pleased to inform you that you have been successful in setting a new Guinness World Record." She adds: "Once again, welcome to the very select brand of Guinness World Records holders!"
The Thunder Bay Paramedics are planning another fundraiser for trauma services, to be held sometime next year.
