Superior North EMS to Increase Complement of Advanced Care Paramedics

Six Thunder Bay paramedics to undergo intensive training

June 7, 2005 - Superior North EMS will increase its complement of advanced care paramedics (ACPs) in Thunder Bay from 7 to 13 under a unique training arrangement. All paramedics will be trained locally by Superior North EMS paramedics through Sudbury's Cambrian College's Advanced Care Paramedic program. The intensive program is 6 months long and includes classroom learning, clinical time at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and practical, on-the-road training alongside one of our current ACPs.

"This is an exciting development for Superior North EMS and our paramedics, and represents the cumulation of four years of attempts to increase our ACP complement", said Jocelyn Bourgoin, Director.

ACPs are authorized to provide more advanced care and are trained in advanced assessment skills. For example, they can intubate, provide intra-venous therapy, and have a wider array of drugs including medications for pain control that can be administered to ill and injured patients.

Under a provincial training program, ACPs began practising in Thunder Bay in 1996 with a complement of 12. "Attrition and promotions have left Superior North EMS with the current 7, and we hope that 6 more will help to provide more advanced care to the residents of Thunder Bay", said Bourgoin. "We were able to work with our paramedics and Cambrian College to effect delivery of the program in Thunder Bay using our own resources", he added.

The training will begin in September, and conclude in early February of 2006. Qualified Thunder Bay paramedics are now preparing for the Cambrian College entrance exam. The 6 newly certified ACPs will be 'on the street' in February of next year.
