Superior North EMS Paramedics Graduate from Advanced Training
City Hall Ceremony to Recognize Achievement of 6 Thunder Bay and 1 Armstrong ParamedicMarch 23, 2007 - City of Thunder Bay Mayor Lynne Peterson, Chief Administrative Officer Bob Petrie, and Superior North EMS Director Jocelyn Bourgoin will present certificates to 6 Thunder Bay and 1 Armstrong Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) at a special ceremony at Thunder Bay City Hall today. The paramedics have now been certified as ACPs after completing a 7 month program delivered by Superior North EMS in conjunction with Sudbury's Cambrian College. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre's Base Hospital Program provided medical direction and certification for the ACPs.
"The training will allow the paramedics to provide advanced care to our patients, including intubation, cardiac and narcotic drug therapy, intravenous therapy, and cardioversion" said Norm Gale, Manager of Quality Assurance and Training. "Further, this intensive 7 month program helps our experienced paramedics with other aspects of care such as critical thinking and advanced assessment skills", he added. The laboratory sessions were conducted with over $400,000 worth of advanced interactive equipment designed to provide realistic training scenarios.
The new ACPs are already impacting on patient care in the City of Thunder Bay, with a 14 year old girl being successfully revived from cardiac arrest by one of the new ACPs. As the 7 new ACPs are practicing on the front line, "many more emergency calls in Thunder Bay will now have an ACP at the scene, and this will improve outcomes for our patients, and now Armstrong residents will benefit from having an ACP in the community", said Gale.
The 6 new ACPs join 13 already practising in Thunder Bay bringing the complement up to 19. Superior North EMS is placing an ACP in the community of Armstrong, the first time in the Province that an ACP will practice in such a remote setting.
Media persons may attend the ceremony to speak with the paramedics or City official
