Superior North EMS Paramedics Golf for Memorial Fund
June 9, 2009 – Paramedics raise $2,402.69 for the Josh Klukie Memorial Award
On May 30, paramedics and supporters from across the District participated in the 7th annual EMS golf tournament. The event, held at Dragon Hills Golf Course, raised funds for the Josh Klukie Memorial Award. Seventy-four participants that included paramedics, police officers, firefighters and our supporters came out to have some fun and help raise the funds. Over the past two years EMS golfers have now donated $2,815.69 towards this award.
The Josh Klukie Memorial award was initiated by many of his former college classmates and friends. The Josh Klukie Memorial Award is presented each year to a second year Paramedic Program student at Confederation College who exemplifies the qualities Josh was known for among his peers, that is….. Josh Klukie, who served in the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment was killed while on patrol in the Panjawii district of Afghanistan on Sept. 29, 2006.
A cheque presentation will be held June 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Confederation College’s Thunder Bay campus main entrance. The cheque will be presented to Thunder Bay paramedic Devin Doran, the organizer of the award and a close friend to Josh.
“I would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2009 EMS golf tournament and to those that donated, making this year a huge success” said Ernie Kadikoff, the tournament organizer and Manager Eastern Region – SNEMS. “We are already planning next year’s event, which we hope will be even more fun”.
BACKGROUND
Private Josh Klukie was a Canadian soldier from Thunder Bay that in 2006 was killed in action in Afghanistan. Josh graduated from the paramedic program at Confederation College and was well known to Thunder Bay paramedics. Josh was very athletic and intelligent, had a great personality, and always lived in Northern Ontario. In order to keep the spirit that Josh had alive, Devin Doran, a Thunder Bay paramedic, started a memorial fund in Josh's memory.
The annual bursary will be given to one second year paramedic student at Confederation College who best exemplified what Josh stood for in life. Once this fund reaches $5,000, the Ontario government will match it. To keep this fund alive and make it grow all donations will be added to this principle. Each year as the fund gets bigger it will be reflected in the award.
