Superior North EMS Parademics Undergoing Advanced Training
6 Paramedics in the process of becoming Advanced Care ParamedicsSeptember 15, 2005 - Superior North EMS is training 6 selected paramedics as advanced care paramedics under a joint initiative with Sudbury's Cambrian College. The $250,000 program is provided by Cambrian College, while instruction and equipment is provided by Superior North EMS. Once the training is complete, the six advanced care paramedics (ACPs) will join our 8 current ACPs in February of 2006.
"The training will allow the paramedics to provide advanced care to our patients, including intubation, cardiac and narcotic drug therapy, intravenous therapy, and cardioversion" said Norm Gale, Manager of Quality Assurance and Training. "Further, this intensive 7 month program helps our experienced paramedics with other aspects of care, such as critical thinking and advanced assessment skills", he added.
The first two months of training are focused on classroom lectures and scenario based and advanced equipment training. This is followed by six weeks in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with medical preceptors, and then 9 weeks "on the road" with an ACP preceptor. All training is supervised by a medical director.
The laboratory sessions are conducted with over $400,000 worth of advanced interactive equipment, designed to provide realistic training scenarios. Media persons may visit the training site to observe the training or to speak with students by contacting Norm Gale.
