Sports Injuries Keep Paramedics Busy

Paramedics respond to seven winter sports related injuries over weekend

February 3, 2003 -Paramedics from Superior North EMS responded to seven calls because of winter sports related injuries over the weekend. The injured included four hockey players, two skiers, and one snowmobiler. All of the injuries, though non-life threatening, required a paramedic response and further medical care.

  1. a 13 yr old male received head and rib injuries after being checked into the boards during a hockey game;
  2. a 30 yr old male dislocated his knee while playing hockey;
  3. a 14 yr old male fractured his leg while playing hockey;
  4. a 16 yr old male fractured his ankle while playing hockey;
  5. a 42 yr old male suffered rib injuries after falling while skiing;
  6. a 14 yr old male suffered injuries to his flank while skiing; and
  7. a 33 yr old male suffered a fractured ankle after a snow mobile crash.

"Though many think that sports accidents are an unavoidable part of playing the game, the reality is that every injury can be prevented", said Norm Gale, public information officer for Superior North EMS. "Simple things like regular and routine stretching have been shown to reduce injuries to joints and limbs during sporting activities, and of course playing within the rules and taking due care during the game can drastically reduce injuries."

"People with injuries suffered during sporting events should not hesitate to call 9-1-1 for a paramedic response", added Gale. "Not only can paramedics provide immediate injury stabilization, but under certain circumstances medication for pain control can be administered at the scene, thus making a difficult situation somewhat more bearable."
