Six People Sent to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Marathon After Early Morning Motor Vehicle Collision

January 3, 2007 - Thunder Bay. Superior North EMS paramedics from three communities responded this morning to a motor vehicle collision involving three vehicles at the Pic River Bridge on Hwy 17. Paramedics were notified at approximately 5:30 am on 3 Jan 07.

Six male patients, all adults, suffered various injuries after two pick-up trucks and one full size van collided at highway speed.

Two patients suffered life-threatening injuries, while three others suffered severe injuries. A sixth patient suffered minor facial injuries. All six were assessed and treated at the scene by paramedics, and then transported rapidly to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Marathon while undergoing care.

The life-threatening injuries included head injuries and difficulty breathing, while others suffered severe chest injuries, leg fractures, spinal injuries, and facial injuries.

Nine paramedics responded to the scene. The paramedics responded from Marathon (two crews), Manitouwadge, and Terrace Bay. A supervisor from Marathon also responded. Emergency coverage in Manitouwadge and Terrace Bay was re-established while EMS was at the Pic River scene.
