Provincial Ministry of Health Ambulance Serivce Review Completed

All aspects of Superior North EMS' operations examined

September 16, 2004 - As part of the provincial certification process for Ontario EMS systems, a 20 person inspection / review team has just completed a thorough survey of all aspects of the operations and administration of Superior North EMS.

The review team, consisting of specially trained paramedics and management personnel from EMS systems across Ontario examined the operational aspects of Superior North EMS. Paramedics from the team also rode-along with Superior North EMS crews to observe while patient care calls were completed. The concept is very similar to hospital accreditation processes but with more direct observation of patient care.

"Early indications from the team are that we did quite well", said Jocelyn Bourgoin, Director of EMS. "In particular, they were impressed with how we are using technology to deliver and improve the service that we provide to the citizens in the District of Thunder Bay, and with the care that was provided by our paramedics."

This Ambulance Service Review program is conducted each three years for every EMS system in the Province. Depending on the findings, a certificate to operate is issued for one, two or three years. The certification period is dependent on the Service's overall performance. The team that visited Superior North EMS consisted of 20 persons, the largest such review team outside of the City of Toronto. "This is reflective of the size of Superior North EMS, both geographically and personnel-wise", said Bourgoin. "I am very pleased with the results of the review, and I congratulate and thank our staff for the preliminary results."

A detailed report will be submitted to the Ministry of Health - Emergency Health Services Branch and to Superior North EMS within a few months.
