Paramedics Taking SARS Precautions

June 11, 2003 - Paramedics, along with other health-care professionals province wide are utilizing enhanced precautions when dealing with any patient showing signs of severe acute respiratory syndrome. This includes any patient presenting with shortness of breath, severe headache or fever. When 911 is activated, ambulance dispatchers will screen callers for possible SARS symptoms.

When dispatched, paramedics will be advised when and if SARS cannot be ruled out by the information provided by the caller. Paramedics will arrive at the patient's side wearing goggles, gloves, facemask, and an isolation suit. "These measures are designed to ensure the safety of our patients and our paramedics" said Norm Gale, public information officer for Superior North EMS. "We do not want our patients to be alarmed by these measures, as they are routine and precautionary", he added.

Superior North EMS provides emergency medical services for the City of Thunder Bay and the surrounding district. One hundred and seventy paramedics serve from Upsala through to Manitouwadge and Longlac.
