Memorandum of Settlement Reached with EMS

October 25, 2004 The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce that the City has reached a Memorandum of Settlement with Canadian Auto Workers Local 229 (EMS Thunder Bay).

"We are extremely pleased to reach a tentative deal and, subject to ratification, prevent any disruption in the delivery of ambulance service to the residents of Thunder Bay," said Mayor Lynn Peterson. It's a credit to the bargaining teams on both sides.

The terms will be disclosed after both parties have had an opportunity to ratify the settlement.

Subject to ratification by CAW Local 229 members, the deal is expected to be presented to City Council for ratification on Monday, Nov. 1, 2004

In the event of a strike, land ambulance service would have been delivered under an Essential Services Agreement negotiated between the union and the City. Under the agreement, basic coverage would have been provided to handle essential work necessary to protect the health and safety of the public.

CAW Local 229 represents about 68 Superior North EMS paramedics in the City of Thunder Bay.
