Council Ratifies Settlement with Paramedics
November 1, 2004 – City Council tonight ratified a Memorandum of Settlement between the Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay and Canadian Auto Workers Local 229 (EMS Thunder Bay) representing Paramedics.The settlement affects 68 Superior North EMS Paramedics in the City of Thunder Bay and covers the three-year period from April 1, 2004 to March 31, 2007.
“Though beyond the public sector norm, this agreement is consistent with settlements in this sector,” said Robert Petrie, Chief Administrative Officer. “As such, it keeps Thunder Bay competitive in the tight labour market for Paramedics.”
The wage increases approved by Council will bring the rate of pay for Primary Care Paramedics up from $24.22 to $28.82 by the year 2007. The agreement provides for the following wage increases: 11.1 % at April 1, 2004, 3.5% at April 1, 2005 and 3.5% at April 1, 2006. The 2004 increase brings the wages in line with 2003 arbitrated settlements in Northwestern Ontario.
Consistent with City Council’s New Foundation Living Strategic Plan, the union agreed to design changes in the Extended Health Care (Drug) benefit plan that, over time, will help to contain the rising costs associated with the drug plan.
