City to Select a New Site for North Side EMS Station
April 28, 2008 Thunder Bay City Council resolved tonight to advise the Lakehead Public School Board that it would like to terminate an agreement to purchase the land formerly operated as part of the Oliver Road School. This property had been designated by the City as the site of the new Thunder Bay North EMS Station and Headquarters. Superior North EMS will bring a report to City Council in May with recommendations on a new, preferred site."After reviewing our data, including new data from 2007 and community input, we have determined that we have a new site that meets all of the criteria for an EMS station, while bringing response times that are at least equal and perhaps superior to the response times projected at the Oliver Road site," said Norm Gale, Director of Superior North EMS. "Important criteria includes an appropriately sized location close to the high call volume areas, arterial and four lane roadway access, and a central north side location," added Gale.
Since 1996, Superior North EMS paramedics have responded to 86% more 911 emergency calls. Emergency 911 response times have not measurably decreased since that time despite operational changes. In February 2008, Council approved the expansion of an additional ambulance staffed strategically during peak times for eight hours, five days a week.
"The location of a station on the north side of Thunder Bay is an important component of our multifaceted approach to reduce our emergency 911 response times. In 2007, emergency 911 response times in the north side were 1 minute and 41 seconds longer than they were in the south side, and EMS station location is but one measure that will employed to correct this problem," said Gale.
