CAW Local 229 Postpones Strike Deadline to Tuesday
October 22, 2004 - Canadian Auto Workers Local 229 (EMS Thunder Bay) has advised the City of Thunder Bay that it is postponing its strike deadline to Tuesday, Oct. 26, 7 pm.Talks yesterday, Oct. 21, were unsuccessful in reaching a settlement.
In the event of a strike, land ambulance service will be delivered under an Essential Services Agreement negotiated between the Union and the City. Under the agreement, basic coverage would be provided to handle essential work necessary to protect the health and safety of the public. Three ambulances will be available 24/7, compared with the seven that normally operate. Non-essential services such as patient transfers between facilities will not be provided.
CAW Local 229 represents about 68 Superior North EMS paramedics in the City of Thunder Bay.
Superior North EMS paramedics in the District outside the City of Thunder Bay will not be directly affected in the event of a strike; these services will continue to operate. Only paramedics in the City of Thunder Bay will be directly affected and only paramedics in the City of Thunder Bay will operate under the Essential Services Agreement.
