– Three Superior North EMS paramedics have received medals from the Governor General of Canada in recognition of their outstanding contribution to paramedicine, their community, and for service. The medals were presented to the paramedics by Major General Richard Rohmer, Canada’s most decorated person, at a special ceremony in Ajax, Ontario, on Sept. 24.

Receiving the medal:

Gord MacCabe

, ACP, Thunder Bay, for close to three decades of excellent front-line patient care in both land and air environments. Gord instructs SNEMS paramedics in many patient care programs.

Jeff Monas, ACP, Thunder Bay, is a McNally Award recipient (2006) who for almost 20 years has provided strong union leadership. Jeff has used his expertise as a College instructor for more than 10 years, and many SNEMS paramedics have been trained by him. He has also mentored recruit paramedics for many years.

There are over 6,000 practising paramedics in Ontario today, and just 100 paramedics received the medal this year.

The requirements for consideration include more than 20 years of service, with at least 10 of those years requiring front-line service involving some personal risk.  The recipient is also required to show that they have had some sort of positive impact or contribution to their community.  "These paramedics have contributed to our communities through their efforts at excellent patient care, and by having added impact to the provision of quality patient care of their colleagues", said Norm Gale, Chief of EMS. "Their efforts have been formally recognized on a national level, and we are proud of their work", Gale added.

The Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal, created July 7, 1994, recognizes professionals in the provision of emergency medical services to the public who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner characterized by conduct, energy, and efficiency.  The medal is part of Canada’s official awards system which tangibly reflects national gratitude for long and outstanding service.
