Kaministiqua First Response Team

Way back in 1987 is when it all began for the Kaministiquia First Response Team. Our Fire Chief at the time wanted the firefighters all trained in First Aid and CPR to benefit the firefighters and the public. The Chief was made aware of a program that supplied free training, equipment and in some cases, uniforms and vehicles. He looked into it and the first First Response team, within commuting distance of Thunder Bay, was born.

There were 15 dedicated volunteer members, most of them firefighters already, that jumped at the chance to help the community again. Each attended a 40-hour training course given by the Ministry of Health. Both teams, fire and first response, existed on donations and monies received from bingos and fundraising.

Through the years, the team have answered hundreds of calls in our large area. Everything from vehicle collisions, people pinned under tractors, people falling off roofs, industrial accidents, drug problems, right down to a fish hook in a finger.

Our vehicle, Rescue 64, has changed from a station wagon to a four wheel drive suburban which was donated to us from Bell Canada.

The Kam First Response Team trains from September to June on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Fire Hall on the corner of Silver Falls Road and Highway 102 (Dawson Road) beginning at 19:00 (7:00 p.m.) We are always looking for more recruits. Please contact our coordinator Sue Jeffrey at 807-933-4476 for information on how you can join.
